The Aim


  • The HCI must be convenient and reliable to the patients/users. In our analysis, given time constraints of the patients, they should get easy access to the consultation.


  • Whenever the user feels the need of a consult, it should instantly guide our users without being on a wait list.

  • It gives the patient a free choice of either taking instant assistance or scheduling an appointment with the desired doctor.


  •  In this scenario, the interaction between the doctor and the patient should be easy and clear.

  • To determine the clarity for understanding, AI technology helps the doctor explain and give the right direction to the diagnosis.

Ease of Usability

  • The usability of the HCI should be easy to use and enhance the experience of our users. In our application, to determine the symptoms, we try to enhance the experience by giving the AR feature to scan the body and detect the symptoms of our users.

Function 2: Self Screening

Function Specifics

Self-Screening is a tech-friendly concept that provides our user with an ability to scan their symptoms. After the user registers himself into the application, he can type in the symptoms that he is facing. However, there can be few symptoms that the user is not able to determine along with the severity of the symptom. In such cases, self-screening will help him with the issue. It provides the user with the ability to scan the visible symptoms, for example, swelling in arm or gums, ankle sprain, redness of the eye, etc. Introducing AR will make the usability of the search engine easy to use. We did not break this task further because the task would end at the search results provided by artificial intelligence.

HTA: Instant Care

Function Specifics

Instant care is an innovative idea to provide speedy access to healthcare to the patients. It would allow them to enter their symptoms and be able to check their diagnosis generated by artificial intelligence. However, even during the process, if a user feels that they need to talk to a doctor in case of an emergency they are allowed to connect with them. People need a quick and easy way to access healthcare without having to visit a doctor. We consume over-the-counter medicines in our daily lives, but we should be cautious with them. Instant care is a concept to help the patients determine if their judgment about a particular symptom is correct, or they should visit a professional to prevent prolonged use of over the counter medicines. If the patient is unsatisfied, they can move on to scheduling an appointment with the doctor.

Function 1: Patient Registration

Prototype Specifics

  • The patient first downloads the application from the Play store/Apple store for Android/IOS users.

  • After downloading the app, they are prompted to choose from various options of languages. 

  • The patient is then directed to the sign-up page and has to then enter their full name, email and set an appropriate password.

  • The patient will be sent a one-time password which they have to enter to verify the device being used.

Function 2: Self Screening

HTA: Consultation Meeting

Function Specifics

Meeting with the doctor is one of the primary purposes of this system. The patient can connect with the doctor on a video call to discuss his symptoms. When the patient joins the call, the doctor has an option to start the recording so that he can go back to the notes if necessary. It is not always possible to explain what's  wrong with the user without  pointing it out. The doctor has an option to open an AR diagram that can help him make the patient understand through simulation what's  going on in his body. As the communication is going on, the doctor is filling out and updating the patient files. The notes gathered capture the required content to convert them into subscriptions. This reduces the consultation time for doctors as well as patients. If the patient needs a follow-up appointment, the doctor can do that by suggesting what his next steps could be. All this gets updated in the patient profile.

Function 3: Instant Care

  • To assist our user with any ambiguity they may feel about what is happening to them but also with their desire to find a treatment for their symptoms, our user can complete this task in two different ways.

  • The user scans the visible symptoms using the scanner that appears after clicking the AR button. Once the scan is ready, a pop-up appears to ask for the approval of the scan. If the scan is approved, the system will detect the scan and give the possible results of doctors with their specializations in the required department.

  • The search gives an ability to the user to analyze the specializations of the doctor with the help of ratings and reviews given by other users.

Function 4: Consultation Meeting

  • The third function will generate AI-based diagnosis to provide quick check-up experience for not so severe health conditions.

  • Users need to select the checkbox for the given set of symptoms. It can be overwhelming for a patient to read out every step in the list and then read the consent form and offer a signature to get the help they need.

  • While the patient is using urgent care, it means that they are somewhat anxious and want quick results.

  • An empty state screen  that will give the information the doctor will join the call soon, and they are on the correct path, also there can be a voice note playing the same message for the user to understand it swiftly (Transient feedback (Lee et al., 2017, p.295)).

Usability Testing

Prototype Specifics

  • This is the most important function as the main interaction with the doctor happens at this point. Ideally when a doctor joins the meeting, and the patient is communicating with him, there are high chances of having network issues, confusions and misunderstandings.

  • Within this function, on the call, the patient can know firsthand why there is no response from the other end- if the doctor is typing in the file, there is a network error, doctor is away, doctor is checking patient files, doctor is adding another doctor to the call - this helps give the patient visibility of what is happening within the system and on the other side call.

  • An AR diagram helps the patient understand what exactly is wrong with him. The doctor and patient can interact with the diagram to get a complete picture and full understanding of all the issues and concerns the patient has.
